Joyce Agnes

Funeral mass was held on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rolette, for Joyce Marcelene Agnes, 75, Bottineau and formerly of Rolette, who died Monday, May 25 at St. Andrew’s Health Center, Bottineau.

Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, rural Rolette.

Joyce was born Oct. 24, 1933 at Waubay, S.D., the daughter of Phillip and Lucille (Barron) Horswill. She attended grade school at Shell Valley Country School and graduated from Wolford High School in 1952. She received a teaching certificate from Minot State Teachers College and taught school at Maryville and South Valley. Joyce married Fillmore P. Agnes on Sept. 1, 1955 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Oklee, Minn. They lived in Virginia, Minn., until 1959 when they moved to the Rolette area. She received her nursing degree in 1974 and worked in various hospitals and clinics until retirement. From 1996 to 1998 Joyce and Fillmore were in Uganda, Africa, doing missionary work. Fillmore died on May 9, 2008.

She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary of Rolette. She was an Associate of Sisters of the Presentation of Mary and after moving to Bottineau was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, the Befrienders Club and also did volunteer work.

She is survived by her children: Steven Agnes, Fargo; David Agnes, Bottineau; Jeffrey Agnes, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; Catherine Andre, Vermillion, S.D.; Carolann Dvorak, Bismarck; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Galen Horswill, Red Lake Falls, Minn.; sisters, LaVonne Radneicki and Blanche Gill, both of Apache Junction, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Llewellyn, Merlyn and Harlen Horswill; and a sister, Shirley Blessum.

Fr. Philip Chacko, Fr. Tom Graner and Fr. Paul Schuster officiated.
