Sister Mary Ann Brossart

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Maryvale Convent Chapel, Valley City, for Sister Mary Ann Brossart, SMP, 96, Valley City, who died Friday, April 24 at St. Aloisius Medical Center, Harvey.

Burial was in the Maryvale Convent Cemetery.

Sister Mary Ann was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Rugby, the daughter of John and Cecilia (Schneider) Brossart. She professed her vows as a Sister of Mary of the Presentation on March 16, 1933 in Broons, France. She graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in Valley City and graduated as a registered nurse from the St. Andrew’s School of Nursing in Bottineau. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing education from Carroll College in Helena, Mont., and a master’s degree in nursing administration from DePaul University, Chicago. Sister Mary Ann held various nursing supervisory positions in Bottineau, Rolla and Spring Valley, Ill., and from 1985 until 1997 worked with Red River Valley Hospice in Fargo. In 1997 she retired to Maryvale Convent.

She is survived by the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation; four sisters, Frances Volk, Towner; Cecilia Maier, Milwaukee, Wis.; Agatha Mattern, Balta; and Rose Hornstein, Tioga; three brothers, Joe Brossart, Rugby; Ned Brossart, Grand Forks; and Leo Brossart, Roosevelt, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Rose Brossart, Rugby; and Julia Brossart, Grand Forks.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, John, Ben, Frank, Paul, and Pius Brossart.
