Math Schwab

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Esmond, for Math Schwab, 90, Esmond, who died Sunday, April 26 at the Heart of America Medical Center.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Math was born April 20, 1919 at Esmond to Mathias and Johanna (Gisinger) Schwab. He was raised and educated at Esmond. He entered the Army on Oct. 28, 1940 and served in the Southwest Pacific Theatre at Guadalcanal and the Northern Solomons during WWII. On Nov. 9, 1942 he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was discharged on Aug. 8, 1945 and returned to Esmond. He married Dorothy College on Nov. 6, 1946 at Esmond. The couple made their home in Esmond, where he worked for 16 years in the Esmond Creamery, owned the Esmond Laundromat for four years and then worked for the Benson County Highway Department until his retirement. Dorothy died Jan. 8, 2004. Math remained in Esmond until his death.

He was a member of the Esmond VFW Post #4251 and served on the Esmond City Council for many years.

He is survived by five daughters: Paulette Paulius, DePere, Wis.; Kristie Partain, Erhard, Minn.; Penny Armentrout, Devils Lake; Jodi Johnson and Wanda Schwab of Valley City; three sons, Chester Schwab, Bismarck; Terry Schwab, Esmond; and Todd Schwab, Rugby; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandson; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers Michael, Peter, Joseph and Jacob; and sisters Katherina, Ottilia, Hannah, Mary and Filmenna.

Pastor Harold Ovre officiated. Music was provided by Henning and Myrtle Jacobson, vocalists, and Margaret Toso, organist.

Casketbearers were his grandsons.
