George Leier
Funeral mass will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Orrin, for George Peter Leier, 99, Rugby, who died Saturday, April 18 at the Heart of America Long Term Care Center.
Burial will be in the church cemetery later in the spring.
George was born April 1, 1910 in the rural Orrin home of his parents, Peter and Magdalena (Zeigler) Leier. He was raised there and received his education in a country school near his home. On June 8, 1931 he married Elizabeth Moszer at Orrin. A lifelong farmer, George retired in 1961, and they moved into Orrin, where he drove a school bus and worked for Johnnie’s Motor Service in Rugby. The couple moved to the Haaland Estates in the summer of 2002. Elizabeth died Dec. 24, 2002. He continued to live at Haaland Estates until moving to the long term care center.
He was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Orrin and later in Rugby. He was a former township supervisor and board member of Center Mutual Insurance and the Farmers Union.
He is survived by two sons, Albert, Orrin, and Ray, Rugby; 22 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchldren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Bernie Leier, Rugby, and Dorothy Leier, Anamoose; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sons, Frank and Harold; three brothers, John, Peter and Joe; five sisters, Lena, Mary, Katherine, Christine and Ann; and his parents.
Msgr. Father Joseph Senger will officiate. Organist will be Meghan Grauman and vocalist will be Katrina Leier.
Casketbearers will be grandsons Leeallen Leier, Wayne Leier, Todd Leier, Mitch Leier, Steve Leier, Tom Leier, Terry Leier and Mike Leier. Honorary bearers will be his granddaughters.
