Irene Schaan

Funeral mass was held Monday, March 23, 2009 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Balta, for Irene DeLayne Schaan, 77, Balta, who died Monday, March 16 at Trinity Medical Center in Minot.

Burial will be in the Little Flower Church Cemetery, Rugby, in the spring.

Irene was born June 10, 1931 in the home of her parents in Esmond, the daughter of Jacob and Barbara (Burgard) Wolf. She grew up there, and attended grade school in Esmond. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Devils Lake in 1949. She attended UND in Grand Forks. On June 14, 1950 she married Imanuel Schaan in Fillmore. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Esmond, where they owned and operated the Super Value grocery store for four years. They then moved to Minot, where Irene worked as a bookkeeper at various businesses, including Buttrey’s, Sullivan’s Floral and the Girl Scouts’ business office. She also managed the children’s clothing department at Sears. In 1976 the family moved to Rugby, where they owned and operated Schaan’s Electronics. Imanuel died Feb. 18, 1996.

She is survived by a son, Jacob “Jay” Schaan, Balta; three daughters, Barbara Schaan, Fargo, Vicki Miller, Concord, Calif., and Shaana Hallof, Balta; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leona “Jane” Frazier and Kathy Wickman, both of Minot.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Randy; a grandson; a brother, Jim Wolf, and her parents.

Fr. Julian Kupisz was the celebrant. Organist was Barb Lee, and soloist was Nancy Silliman.

Casketbearers were grandsons Garrett Price, Joseph Price, Stephen Olson, Nicholas Schaan, Aaron Hallof and Andy Hallof.
