Harvest time at Little Flower
Last spring the 5th and 6th grade class, with the leadership of Mr. Jim and Mrs. Deb Hoffert, planted a garden behind the school. After it was tilled, students planted potatoes, pumpkins, onions, tomatoes, carrots, and beets. They were taught the skills for using garden tools and how to plant the various crops. Other topics learned were the importance of enriching soil before planting, and how to plant the correct distance apart as well as depth into the soil. The rain which fell immediately after planting jump started the garden for the tremendous growing season.
Mrs. Vernice Brossart worked over the summer keeping the garden weeded and providing what was needed to make the garden a huge success. A big thanks to Mrs. Brossart and Mr. and Mrs. Hoffert for all of their hard work in spreading the benefits of gardening and eating local foods when possible.
In the last two weeks 5th and 6th graders have been working hard to harvest the vegetables in the garden. Every student at Little Flower School received a pumpkin to take home. They have harvested the vegetables for use in our school lunches program. Father Tom Graner makes sure we have the tools we need to get the job done. This is a great example of how people can come together to make great things happen!
