RHS FBLA members attend leadership conference
Twelve members of the Rugby High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter attended the 51st annual ND FBLA State Leadership Conference and Competition in Bismarck, March 25-27, 2018. Over 60 FBLA chapters from across the state participated in this conference, where approximately 1,500 students had the opportunity to test their business skills.
The most exciting aspect of the conference is the competitive events program. Students have the opportunity to test the business skills they’ve learned in the classroom in a variety of individual, team, and chapter events. Students can enter events such as accounting, computer applications, publication design, advertising, business communication, spelling and proofreading, word processing, securities and investments, organizational leadership or business ethics. The culmination of the competitive events program is the awards ceremony where winners are recognized for their accomplishments and the top four in each event qualify for nationals. Students also had the opportunity to attend workshops, vote for the 2018-2019 state officer team, network with members from around the state and bond as a chapter. Members had a special dinner at the Olive Garden restaurant and a fun evening of bowling at Midway Lanes.
The keynote speaker, Holly Hoffman, was born and raised in South Dakota and was a contestant on season 21 of the CBS reality show “Survivor Nicaragua.” Holly is a professional motivational speaker and the author of Your Winner Within. She correlated her experiences from being on the show and personal experiences with the 2017-2018 FBLA theme-Elevate Your Future. Her message was “nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” Holly recognizes “that life is made up of challenges, and we are oftentimes faced with situations that seem insurmountable. But within each of us is an ability to focus our thoughts, emotions and energy to succeed-if only we have the knowledge, tools, and discipline to do so.”
Members who completed one level of their Business Achievement Awards were then eligible to attend the State Leadership Conference were: Corina Bell, Dessa Denich, Robert Dibble, Morgan Hjelden, Daniel Kearns, Rylee Kuntz, Mariah Munyer, Mariah Pfeifer, Trenton Sanford, Amber Schmaltz, Shailah Strand and Jenna Wangler.
Daniel Kearns, Amber Schmaltz, Jenna Wangler, and Rylee Kuntz will be competing at the National Leadership Conference and Competition June 26th to July 2rd in Baltimore.
