Ely’s million words club sees new entrants
Several students and one teacher at Ely Elementary School in Rugby were new entrants into the Million Word Club.
This year’s entrants were instructor John Groves; Dylan Bartsch, Erik Foster, Janikka Miller, Reese Larocque, Connor Klein, Brooklyn Hager, Danica Gross, Alexis Grigsby, Kaedyn DeMontigny, Macen Heisler, Megan Schmaltz, Kristian Fritz, Abigail Hager, Haley Mayer, Sara Schmaltz, Carter Teigen, Mya McNeff, Taylor Pritschet, Lauren Westphal and Jackson Brossart.
Via the Renaissance Learning Program, classroom teachers use Accelerated Reader testing in lieu of book reports and require students read a minimum of 18 books that are on the program at their level and pass the AR tests.
Miller set a new school record by going over 4.5 million words, reading and passing the tests on 67 books to do so.
The school saw its first second grader make the club in Abigail Hager, who read and passed the tests on 141 books, putting her over 1.9 million words.
Usually fourth, fifth and sixth graders comprise club membership, but this year also saw third grade membership in Teigen, Gross and Schmaltz.
Mike Santjer’s sixth grade class currently holds the record for most words read, with over 19.1 million for the class.
Over the 2016-17 school year 6,353 books, or more than 74.8 million words, were read by participating students.
