Speech team to compete in Rugby
The Rugby speech team kicked off its season at a competition hosted by Rolette Public Schools on Jan. 17. Twelve area schools were in attendance with roughly 100 students participating across 14 categories.
Rugby students, under the coaching of Kyle Vareberg and Tammy (Kruger) Loran, took home some impressive hardware, including the first place team sweepstakes award. Seventeen students attended the tournament; all 17 brought home an individual award.
Kate Heidlebaugh, in her first competition as a seventh-grader, took firstt place in storytelling and qualified for the state tournament on April 25 in Mandan. In addition, Darby Deckert took first place in extemporaneous programmed reading (EPR) and also qualified. The duo of Deckert and ReeAnn Christianson took home first place in humorous duo, allowing them to also qualify for the state competition.
The Rugby speech team continues its season at the home tournament today. Sixteen schools travelled to Rugby for the competition.
