Ely Elementary and Rugby Jr./Sr. High schools wrapped up their book fairs Tuesday evening during parent-teacher conferences.

Ely librarian Kathy Erickson said the event was a success, with the second day of the fair being one of the busiest days on her end from the get-go.

“It was wild at 8:30 a.m.,” Erickson said. “The kids came in and they had money.”

Ely surpassed its book fair goal of $2,200, after which Scholastic takes a 50 percent credit off each book kept for the library. The library is then allowed to use those credits as it sees fit.

“It was a successful book fair (this year) thanks to our customers and to our volunteers,” Erickson said.

This year was the first year RHS held a book fair, and librarian Tammy Loran said it was a success.

“I think it worked out pretty well, it ran smoothly,” Loran said. “Considering it was the first time, it did well and I hope it gets better as it continues.”

Loran said one of the busiest times for the RHS book fair was in the afternoons, during 8th period SRB.

“You never know what kind of crowds you’ll get at any time,” Loran said.

Both libraries will be able to have a copy of each book sold during both fairs, however, Loran said some books were excluded from the high school library because they were not at the right age level.

When asked if there was something about this year’s fairs that could’ve been done differently or changed for another year, Erickson said a parent suggested moving the red banner advertising the fair from the east side of Ely to the north side, facing 2nd Street. Loran said she would like to work on getting more volunteers, and getting teachers to advertise it to their students more.

The book fair was held last week from Tuesday through Friday, and on Monday and Tuesday of this week during parent-teacher conferences.
