FFA takes second at conference
The Rugby FFA Chapter continued its high-performing ways last week during the District Leadership Conference.
More than 100 students from several schools, including Rugby, Drake-Anamoose, Towner, Granville, St. John, Rolla, Rolette and Harvey, gathered Oct. 2 in Rugby and competed in various events, including parliamentary procedure, prepared public speaking, extemporaneous speaking, demonstrations and quiz competitions.
Rugby took second place overall in the competition, with Harvey taking first.
Rugby’s parliamentary procedure team, which consists of the chapter’s main officers – Devin Volk, president; McKenzie Johnson, vice president; Allison Heilman, secretary; Sierra Jundt, treasurer; Elizabeth Blessum, sentinel; and Hannah Voeller, reporter – took first place and received high individual awards. Heilman also scored high individual in extemporaneous speaking, while freshman Alissa Volk took second in prepared public speaking. Teams competing in the greenhand (freshman) and senior quiz competitions took second place.
“I feel that we did well. Having the parliamentary procedure team take first place and all the officers as high individuals was just a huge thing,” said Kasey Okke, Rugby FFA adviser and ag instructor. “I think that there’s a great program here and there’s a lot of kids that want to be in it and want to do good. They want to be the best and they want to compete with the best.”
The competition was officiated by former ag advisers, and by current state officers Klay Oland, treasurer; Keylee Odden, sentinel; Ceph Dockter, vice president; and Seena Hagen, secretary.
The Rugby FFA Chapter will compete Wednesday at the state parliamentary procedure contest in Bismarck. They are also slated to compete at the University of Minnesota-Crookston in December for its ag activities day.
