RHS excels at regional music contests
Rugby High School musicians competed at the Regional Instrumental Solo/Ensemble Contest on April 11 at North Star High School in Cando.
Of Rugby’s 19 entrees 10 received stars, a designation for musicians advancing to the Class B State Music Contest on May 3 at Bismarck State College.
Schools competing included Edmore, Lakota, Langdon, Leeds, Maddock, Minnewaukan, Munich, North Star, Rolette, Rolla, Rugby, St. John and Starkweather.
RHS junior Nolan Hovland received an outstanding performance award for his performance on the trumpet.
Rugby students who advanced include individuals: ReeAnn Christianson, flute; Hovland, flute; Darby Deckert, trombone; Reid Mundahl, baritone; Benji Miller, snare drum and timpani.
RHS star ensembles include: Kayla Voeller and Christianson, flute duet; Helen Johnson and Allison Foster, French horn duet; Deckert, Thor Skjelver and Anders Johnson, trombone trio; Helen Johnson, Miller, Brett Berginski, Tanner
Bernhardt, Jaden Munyer, Foster and Kade Leier, percussion ensemble.
At the Regional Vocal Music Festival on April 2 in Minnewaukan, RHS had three soloists and one duet receive stars and advance to the state music competition. Zach Miller and Emily Stier advanced as a duet, and Miller, Hunter Parcel and Benji Miller advanced as soloists. All three RHS boys were in the same grouping and took three of the four regional stars in a field of 16.
RHS choir instructor is Daryl Wissink and band instructor is Kari Hill.
