Rugby speech wins regional meet

By Staff | Apr 10, 2014

The Rugby High School speech team took first place in the Region IV meet in Harvey on April 5. The Panther orators used a total team effort to take home the honors, with every member of the team making finals in at least one event. Eight RHS speakers qualified for the state meet in 10 events.

Making the trek to the state meet in Mandan on April 26 are Zach Miller in Entertain, Rebekah Wangler in Persuade, McKenzie Oppen in Inform, Darby Deckert and Kelsey Schmaltz in Extemporaneous Programmed Reading, Kaitlyn Boucher and Tristin Lunde in Radio Broadcasting, and Schmaltz and ReeAnn Christianson in Dramatic Interpretation. Deckert and Christianson will be the Panthers’ lone pair in the state tournament, representing RHS in humorous duo. RHS speech coach Kyle Vareberg was named Region IV Coach of the Year. Vareberg was especially pleased by his team’s performance.

“The team brought back a first place trophy that was well deserved,” he said.
