Boucher doing work

Bryce Berginski/PCT Rugby eighth-grader Kaitlyn Boucher qualified for a state speech competition

When members of the Rugby speech team try to get themselves ready to compete the day of a meet, some do vocal warmups or recite their pieces. For eighth grader Kaitlyn Boucher, what gets her head in the game is not necessarily a warmup, but being in a certain place.

“Once you get in that draw room, that will pull you right in,” Boucher said.

A draw room is a room (usually a library or media center) in which contestants pick items necessary for their respective events.

Whatever Boucher drew in that room on the team’s first outing worked in her favor. On that first meet of the season, Jan. 18 in Rugby, she took first place in Radio Broadcasting – an event in which contestants do news, weather, sports and a persuasive speech – and qualified for the state meet. This will be the second time she’ll be competing at the state meet, which takes place in Mandan on April 25.

“I just want her to have fun,” Janeen Boucher said of her daughter going to state. “It’s not about winning, it’s about having fun.”

Kaitlyn has competed in several events, including Poetry Interpretation (for which she went to state last year), Speech to Inform and Speech to Persuade, but she said her favorite is radio.

“I think it’s fun,” she said. “It’s something I like to do. I’ve always listened to radio broadcasters.”

Boucher considers the coaching team of Kyle Vareberg and Tammy Kruger to be “awesome,” but another factor in her enjoyment of the experience is her teammates.

“The rest of the team is pretty good to the younger kids,” Boucher said. “The juniors will always be helping out. We’ve got a few seniors on the team, and if you need anything you always ask them.”

Boucher has been working on improving in other events. She considers Speech to be something she’ll continue doing throughout high school.
