Too early to tell: Rugby Speech to face tough meets

By Staff | Jan 31, 2014

With two meets under its belt, Rugby High School’s speech team is hitting the ground running.

Five members went to compete in Velva last week, and all five of them placed in their respective events. Most of the 20 team members who competed in Rugby on Jan. 18 placed as well.

The Rugby speech team also has a state qualifier in Kaitlyn Boucher, who took first place in Radio Broadcasting at the Rugby meet.

However, the team will have some tough competition ahead in the coming weeks. This weekend the team will be heading to Devils Lake.

“Devils Lake will be a good indication of where we’re going and what we need to work on,” said head coach Kyle Vareberg.

According to Vareberg and assistant coach Tammy Kruger, Devils Lake will be a tough meet with Class A schools. Rugby and Velva were both small meets, the latter of which was a Class A/Class B mix. There are also teams that Rugby hasn’t seen yet, such as Berthold and Glenburn, which may prove to be challenges in the future. This month the team will also travel to Cooperstown and Rolla.

Vareberg also said that he will have a full team when they compete at Minot State University in March. Currently there are 25 students on the team.
