The Rugby High School band won the “Outstanding Band” award from all three judges at the Large Group Festival at Maddock Public Schools on Nov. 20.

The Rugby High School band wowed the judges and unanimously took first place at the Large Group Festival at Maddock Public School on Nov. 20.

Performing the pieces “One Was Romanesque” and “Phantom Herd” under the direction Kari Hill, the RHS musicians stood out among the competition, including North Star, Harvey, Maddock, St. John and Leeds.

“I think probably a couple of the things that impressed them the most, from what they said, was the overall balance of the band and the use of really good dynamics and phrasing,” Hill said.

A panel of three judges critiqued the bands following each performance and worked with the groups to improve their craft. Judges could award any of the schools with the Outstanding Band honor and all three chose Rugby.

“I was extremely proud of my students,” Hill said. “They have worked really hard this fall and it has shown in their performances.”

The Rugby High School choir received a star rating from judges at the Large Group Festival.

Choir director Daryl Wissink was pleased with how his group did at the festival. The RHS choir earned a star rating, but the North Star group receiving the outstanding designation.

The RHS choir sang “Bring Me Little Water, Sylvie” by Huddie Ledbetter and a song titled “Just Sing.”

“They were excellent,” Wissink said. “We have very talented musicians at Rugby and I was very proud of them. I didn’t know what to expect. This is the first time in many years, probably 12 to 15 years, they did the large-group music festival.”

Judges included retired and active music teachers from around the state.
