First day of school
Enrollment at Pierce County’s schools for the 2012-13 school year is 647. Last year’s figure was 661. Instead of enrollment decreases that were predicted years back, the enrollment in Pierce County seems to be stable.
“We are bottom heavy,” said Mike McNeff, superintendent, Rugby public schools. “The growth is in the elementary school.”
The kindergarten class at Ely Elementary is the largest class of that school with an enrollment of 44 students. That is a five student increase over last year’s kindergarten class of 39 students. The school lost three students from last year’s kindergarten class for first grade, as they have 36 first grade students this school year. Second grade is down one student, to 41 from 42 last year. The third grade class increased this year with an enrollment of 43 students over last year’s third grade class which had 33 students.Fourth grade this year which was third grade last year stayed the same at 33 students. The fifth grade has 40 students this year while the fifth grade (who are now sixth grade students from last year) had 32 students in 2011-12. The sixth grade class has 36 this year while the sixth grade class last year had 41.
McNeff said he can see that growth continuing.
The junior high has a total of 102 students, with 55 7th grade students and 47 8th grade students. A class of 55 is a good number of students.
Rugby High School students (9-12) enrolled this year add up to 182 students The biggest class is the sophomores with 55 students. The Freshman have 47 students and the juniors have 44 students. The Class of 2013 is the smallest of the four grades as well as the smallest number of seniors in the last few years in Rugby.
The total number of students in the Rugby Public School District is 557 which is one less than the 558 enrollment of last year.
Little Flower Catholic School
Little Flower Catholic School started the 2012-13 year with a total enrollment of 49 in Kindergarten through sixth grade. This is down seven students from last year’s total of 53. An additional 15 students are enrolled in the Pre-School with room for more. The pre-school has a new teacher, Laura Swanson. The school also has a new principal, Charlie Epperson, who teaches physical education. The total number of students including pre-school at this point is 64.
The Kindergarten students are the biggest class with 12 students while the sixth grade has 7 students. First grade has 5 students, second grade has 7 students, third grade has 4 students, fourth grade has 7 students, and fifth grade has 7 students. In this school two grades share a classroom. first and second, third and fourth and fifth and sixth. Kindergarten and pre-school have their own classrooms.
Wolford Publlc School
The total enrollment in Wolford Public School is 41. Last year’s enrollment was 46 with no kindergarten class. This year there are 4 in kindergarten.The biggest class at Wolford K-12 grades is third grade with 6 students. Each of the other grades has the following numbers: first grade -1, second grade- 5, fourth grade – 3, fifth grade -4, sixth grade – 4, 7th grade – 1, eighth grade – 2, freshman -4, sophomores – 2, juniors – 4 and one lone senior for the Class of 2013.
