FFA brings home awards

By Staff | Oct 8, 2010

The Rugby FFA chapter recently participated in the state range judging contest held Aug. 5, and the state land judging contest held Sept. 18.

State range judging

The Rugby FFA chapter placed eighth as a team, receiving the bronze award. Individually, Josie Klein received silver and Nathan Bohl, Shayana Veach, and Chris Knudson each received bronze awards.

There are four parts that make up this career development event. Participants must determine the ecological site and similarity index, evaluate the value of the ecological site for beef cattle and sharp-tailed grouse, make improvements, and lastly, practice recommendations based on the current resource value..

State land judging

The Rugby FFA chapter finished with a bronze team award at the state land judging contest held in Scranton.

Individually, Tyler Mongeon received gold, and Tania Roerick and Michelle Black each received bronze awards. Clay Vannett finished in sec-

ond place in the Jr. 4-H event.

In this career development event, participants learn how to texture soil, determine slope of the land and multiple erosion hazards, determine soil depth, and degree of salinity and permability. Once these factors are determined, management practices are made that will improve the land, such

as improving fertility, maintaining top soil, controlling erosion, and increasing yields.
