Hairstylist Gloria Grove has been styling hair in the salon at Haaland Estates for seven years. She has been a cosmetologist since 1974, graduating from the New York Hair Design Academy in Fargo. Her first job after school was in Rugby.

Grove remembered when she first started accepting clients at the first salon she worked at in Rugby. At the time, Genevieve “Gen” Halls was the owner of the salon and it was called Vanity Salon.

“I was looking for a job and a gal here had a beauty shop,” she said. “She called me asking if I would come to Rugby. This was in 1974, so I did. I cut hair, hair coloring, perms, manicures and we had a full service salon. I worked the entire week. I had a busy schedule. “

Grove also said, “I had my regular clientele. Hair styles were different. Clients wanted their hairstyle to last through the entire week. Teasing and backcombing hair was in, and people who would go to events like weddings and the Knights of Columbus, they wanted their hair to be ready. Girls wanted updos and French rolls. I loved it. It was a good feeling when they walked out happy.”

Grove works at the salon Wednesdays and Thursdays to style residents’ hair. Her clients like to come in every week and have their hair done. One resident, Bergetta Hager, has been her client for the past five years.

“Residents love getting their hair done,” Grove said. “They enjoy coming, and comment, ‘I don’t know what we would do without you.’ I like to style their hair so they can do other things they have planned at Haaland Estates.”
