Third grade classes from Ely Elementary School traveled to the Prairie Village Museum on Thursday, Oct. 2, to learn about citizenship, the history of the Silva Schoolhouse and the fundraising the museum is doing.
The third grade classes have been working on exploring the history of the Silva Consolidated School.
“Our third graders have been learning about the importance of citizenship and how they can make a difference in their community. They’re proud to take part in preserving a piece of history so that future generations can continue to enjoy and learn from it,” Abbey Schneider, third grader teacher, said.
The school first opened in 1916 and closed in 1970. For 30 years, the enrollment averaged 93 students, according to museum information.
The museum is repairing the Silva Schoolhouse in stages. Currently, it is in phase two and raising money to fix the foundation. The museum has raised enough money to replace the shingles in phase one. Phase three is to repair and repaint the siding. Phase four is to replace the windows.
