Library in full swing with summer reading programs

By PCT Staff - | Jun 28, 2025

The Heart of America Library is in full gear for summer with a slate of reading programs aimed at engaging young readers and rewarding their efforts.

According to library director Mandie Medalen, the annual “Read for a Wristband” program has seen strong participation from area students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Children who read 15 library books earn a coupon for a one-day ride wristband at the Pierce County Fair being held through Sunday, June 29. This year, students are also receiving bonus treats for going above and beyond.

“As of June 19, we’ve checked out 1,126 books to students participating in the Read for a Wristband program,” Medalen said.

The library’s summer programming will continue in July with “Color Our World,” an art-focused initiative featuring local artists. The artists will lead projects that allow students to explore new creative forms and “bring COLOR to the library,” according to Medalen.

In August, the library will offer its “We All Read for Ice Cream” program, rewarding students who read 15 books with free ice cream from participating local restaurants. A Back to School Summer Story Hour Party is also planned, including books, crafts, music from Amma Mamma and special treats.

“We can’t wait to wish everyone a happy school year,” Medalen said.
