County commission donates sand, gravel to fair

By Charles Crane - Staff Writer | Jun 5, 2025

The Pierce County Commission approved a donation of sand and gravel to the Pierce County Fair at its regular meeting Tuesday.

Don Jelsing with the Pierce County Fair joined the meeting and informed the board he could use more gravel for pathways and moving around, ultimately for safety reasons. Jelsing also mentioned the fair still needed more sand to get the arena finished.

Commissioner Joe Bohl said if they had three blademen, spreading out the gravel could be completed in one day.

The board approved the donation and asked Lee Wolf to get the blademen organized to get the work done for the fair. The fair will be held June 26-29.

The board heard a report from Heart of America Correctional and Treatment Center Administrator Mike Graner. Reviewing the bills for the month of May, Graner noted the bill from Docu Shred stuck out due to a major record purge of treatment records and other files accumulated over the last decade. He said 160 boxes of records were shredded to free up space as they were running out of room.

Graner said the electric boiler was down and needed to be repaired, and he had applied for and received a grant of $2,000 from the Buffalo Lake Sportsmans Club. Graner said the donation was appreciated and needed, with the funds to be used for training, and the purchase of training aids-masks, cuffs and a punch pad.

Graner reported the inmate population at the jail for May was 75, with a high of 79. He said HACTC operated at a deficit of $70,806.39 in April. He said the contract with the U.S. Marshal Service starts July 1 which he expected to increase revenue, and he has requested more inmates from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The board passed a motion to transfer $150,000 from the general fund to the HACTC Fund.

Dena Kemmet, district director for NDSU Extension, joined the meeting and asked the board if they wanted to open the position for a new county agent. The previous agent Brenden Klebe has resigned and will be working for another county. The board passed a motion to open the position of the county agent for Pierce County.
