Individuals from the Pierce County 4-H Hippology senior team took first, second and third places in the individual competition at the Western National Roundup in Denver Jan 9-10.

In the team portion, they placed seventh of 13.

Each person on the team went station to station, answering a wide array of questions on various aspects of horse care such as genetics, pest control and health, according to Barb Rice, the team’s coach.

The team was challenged with questions on such topics as industry wide policy, getting 10 minutes to collaborate with their teammates and respond.

The team won first place in every category except “team problem,” where they took seventh,” Rice said, “They did really well. I was happy for them and proud of them.”

Rice of Maddock was asked to coach for the team about seven years ago. She volunteered because she likes teaching and horses, and she didn’t have a team in her area. She said the girls on her team “had practiced many hours every year and went to many contests,” to get to the point of winning nationals.
