Along the streets in Rugby are several hay bales decorated by families and businesses, and set out for the enjoyment of passersby.

The bales were decorated as part of a contest hosted by the Jaycees, and the winners will be decided by members of the community.

James Buckmeier, franchise owner of the Dairy Queen in Rugby, said he, his son and manager, Jance, and his wife and “brains of the operation” Carmen, were asked to participate in the contest. According to James Buckmeier, since it is their first anniversary as the owners of the business, they decided they should design a birthday cake.

Buckmeier said it is the first time he and his family have ever done anything like this.

People have been commenting on it and it’s been nice to see a bit of decoration by the highway, Buckmeier said.

“It was a fun activity and we’ve already decided what we’re doing next year,” said Buckmeier. He said how his family enjoyed discussing fun ways to decorate bales in the future, and with next year’s “top secret design, the Buckmeier family is looking forward to this new tradition each year.

There are five more bales decorated around Rugby by the Burgard family, Filler family and local businesses.

The contest runs through Sunday and voting information can be found on Rugby Jaycees social media.
