Rugby High School students traveled to the University of North Dakota to compete in the annual Math Track Meet on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

It was the first time students traveled to the event at UND. Traditionally, RHS students would compete at the Minot or Bottineau competitions, which have been discontinued.

The students who represented Rugby were: Connor Klein, Cole Anderson, Alexis Yoder, Brooklyn Bartsch, Sarah Schmaltz, Abby Hager, Beth Schmaltz and Tambrey Brossart.

The students who placed in the meet with honorable mentions for their age categories were: Abby Hager, freshman; Tambrey Brossart, sophomore; Alexis Yoder, junior; and Connor Klein, senior.

Students grades 7-12 took two team tests and four individual math tests throughout the day, half with the use of a calculator and half without. Math problems ranged in difficulty from familiar topics and stretched to problems they may not have studied yet.

The annual meet is to promote math in a fun setting and to form contacts between secondary mathematics students and teachers of secondary mathematics and the UND mathematics faculty.

This competition had around 30 teams, mainly from the Grand Forks school system and the surrounding area schools.
