Two Rugby veterans served their country

Veterans Day is Saturday, a day to honor U.S. military veterans.

Two veterans from Rugby talked about their service in the U.S. military.

Bob Brossart, 67, went into service with the U.S. Marine Corps in 1975.

“I had a signature from my mother because I was underage,” said Brossart.

He spent eight years in the Marines, four of which he served overseas in Okinawa, Japan. After getting out, he joined the National Guard in Rugby until he retired in 1992, giving him 21 years of military service.

He then went on to serve his community by working for the hospital in Rugby for 24 years doing janitorial work.

Now that he is retired, he enjoys going out for karaoke in the community.

James Sattler, 62, served in the North Dakota National Guard for 25 years.

Military service ran in the family, as his father and uncles served before him. Sattler decided he wanted to join as well.

“It had a lot to do with the fact that my uncles were in the service, anywhere from World War II to the Korean War and Vietnam,” said Sattler. Sattler was in the National Guard for 25 years, during which his primary job was to supply NCO. He then became a combat engineer for 12 years.

“If I could do it again, I’d do it again,” said Sattler.

Sattler said he appreciates the sense of camaraderie with his fellow service members and enjoyed his time overseas serving his country.

“I love my country, I love my flag,” said Sattler.

Nowadays, he spends his time as a rural mail carrier in Rugby. He helps his community through involvement with the American Legion when he can.

“Unfortunately, sometimes my job prevents me from helping out when it’s needed, but I’m sure there’s going to be a time when I’m able to help out in any way that I can,” said Sattler.

Sattler said he wants the community to know that if you are thinking of joining the National Guard, you should go for it.

“You would not be disappointed. There’s always the GI bill for college and it’s a chance to see the world. I loved it,” said Sattler.
