Chamber hosts Farmer and Rancher Appreciation Supper

Sue Sitter/PCT Minneapolis comedian Tommy Ryman describes his life growing up with hippie parents to an audience of local farmers and ranchers at the Rugby Eagles.

The Rugby Chamber of Commerce teamed with several area businesses to host its annual Farmer and Rancher Appreciation Supper Saturday, March 27, at the Rugby Eagles.

Guests enjoyed a meal of meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy and more after a social hour sponsored by Horizon Ag Service. A performance by stand-up comedian Tommy Ryman of Minneapolis followed.

Ryman had the more than 100 guests chuckling and clapping as he joked about life in the Midwest, his father, who got excited by homemade kale chips, and his new-age mom who “activated” rivers with crystals.

Chamber Executive Director Laurie Odden said the supper “usually coincides with the ag show put on by Rugby Broadcasters. They decided this year not to do that event because of COVID.”

“Then,” she added, “As a board, we decided, just because there’s no ag show doesn’t mean we can’t have a supper. It’s kind of an addition to the ag show, so we decided to do this.”

Odden said the supper was “free to farmers and ranchers and their guests, of course. It’s just to thank our farmers. We feel there are different groups that don’t always get to be recognized. It’s Farm Appreciation Month, so we try to do this around this time. That’s why we picked this Saturday.”

Odden added, “We want to give them a night out and let them relax a little bit before they get crazy busy with spring work, although, we’re a little bit later this year, so we’re already into calving season.”

“Grove’s Catering is taking care of our meal tonight,” Odden said.

Other activities included a prize drawing using playing cards organized by chamber board member Tricia Jundt.

Board member Josh Mattson served as emcee for the evening.

Other businesses sponsoring the event were: Envision; Bremer Bank; Brossart Business and Tax Service; Center Mutual Insurance; Cobblestone Inn and Suites; Cow Country Supply; Daryl’s Refrigeration; Farm Credit Services; Famers Union Insurance; First International Bank; Goldade Financial; Gooseneck Implement; Harper Oil; Heart of America Ag Service; High Plains Equipment; Highway 2 Collision Center; Johnson’s Plumbing; Mack Law Office; MJ McGuire’s; Merchants Bank; NDTC; Nodak Insurance; NSCCU; Nuline Insurance; Oakwood Inn; Ramsey Bank; Rugby Broadcasters; Rugby Dental Office; Rugby Farmers Elevator; Rugby Greenhouse; Rugby Insurance Agency; Rugby Lumber and Rugby Veterinary Service.
