Extension office offers something for people on or off the farm

By Sue Sitter - | Mar 27, 2021

Pierce County residents living on or off the farm can find something useful from the Pierce County NDSU Extension this spring.

For in or out-of-town residents interested in growing flowers and veggies, the extension hosts their Spring Fever Garden Forum.

Extension Agent Brenden Klebe said the forum, which began March 22, will he held every Monday until April 12

“It goes from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.,” Klebe said. “With COVID going on, I encourage people to go online and register for it.”

Klebe said he also sets up a screen at the extension office in the Pierce County Courthouse for those interested in attending in person.

“NDSU Extension is showing programs on gardening topics and tips,” Klebe said. “Last night, they talked about starting a program and getting it going for the spring, trying to beat the insects and get some lettuce and things like that going. Kind of getting a head start on gardening.”

Klebe has been with the Extension office for six months. “I’m still getting the gist of things,” he said, adding he enjoys his work so far.

Another thing I do is host an agronomy coffee hour every Wednesday Morning at Dakota Farms,” Klebe said. “People can come in and have a cup of coffee with me and I’m more than happy to cover a wide range of topics from seed and chemical fertilizer, crop markets and more.”

“I encourage them to come and pick my brain a little bit and we can have a conversation in a relaxed setting for the most part. I’ll even buy the first cup of coffee; we’ll call it good that way,” he added with a laugh.

“That will be going until spring’s work gets going, because farmers get pretty busy then,” Klebe added.

“I’m also looking at getting a community garden going, or even a pollinator garden,” Klebe added. “I believe they had one at the Prairie Village Museum a few years ago. I want to talk with them and see if they’re up for me planting a little pollinator garden there so people can check it out and get a little learning in.”

“I’m still really getting used to things,” Klebe said of his work at the Extension office. “I’ve got to gauge the community now and see what the needs are. Without a FCW (Family and Community Wellness) agent in town, I can help with a few things. I can at least get in communication with the neighboring counties, too.”
