Cupid’s Chase brings Valentine’s Day specials to shoppers braving the cold

Icy winds and below-zero temperatures can’t put a damper on love for North Dakotans.

To mark Valentine’s Day, businesses in Rugby will reward shoppers who brave the cold with hot chocolate, goodies and special buys Saturday, Feb. 13.

Rugby small business owners pulled together to share ideas on promoting local shopping recently, with help from Rugby Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Laurie Odden, who serves as a point person for the group.

Business owner Jennifer Mattson, who owns the Jeneral Store, suggested a Valentine’s Day-themed promotion called Cupid’s Chase.

“I can’t say the Chamber is necessarily sponsoring this event; I’m just like the organizer or P.R. person,” Odden explained. “I said I’d create the event to share it, talk about it and promote it. So, I’m the keeper of the information and the spreader of the information. I want to help businesses; I want promote people shopping. I want people to stay shopping in Rugby.”

“We were saying, ‘What can we do for Valentine’s Day?'” Odden said. “We have some restaurants who have specials for Valentine’s Day (celebrated Feb. 13) and the retail businesses have promotions, too,” she added. “I know Hangovers Bottle Shop and Flawless Medical Spa have things going on; Jennifer (Mattson) at the Jeneral Store has something she was planning to do. Market on Main had some thoughts on what they wanted to do; Ashley at Main Street Boutique will have something; Styling You is running some specials on Valentine’s items and I’m sure she’ll have specials at Solid Ground Cafe, too.”

Odden said local businesses I Design and This ‘N That made plans for special promotions for the day, too.

“It may not be big, but if you’re out and about strolling around, you can find something,” Odden said of the sales and special surprises in store for shoppers.

Most promotions for Cupid’s Chase will take place Feb. 13, but Odden noted, “If any places are open on Valentine’s Day, it will be then, too.”

In keeping with the romantic theme, several Rugby restaurants will offer romantic supper specials. “Right now, we have a few things going on. Dakota Farms is planning supper specials; 3rd Street Station is planning special suppers for Friday and Saturday night, and the Eagles has a supper Saturday night as well,” Odden said.

Odden said the small business group isn’t finished brainstorming. Plans are already in the works for a St. Patrick’s Day-themed promotion Thursday, March 18. “It will be called the Shamrock Shuffle for people to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and spring,” she noted.

An Easter-themed promotion is slated for April. Odden said the Rugby Jaycees might help with ideas for the event.

Odden said businesses throughout Rugby will be participating in promotions such as Cupid’s Chase. “It’s for all of Rugby,” Odden said of the promotions. “The Brown Lantern, La Bella Vita Salon, Home of Economy, this is for all businesses along the highways as well as downtown. It’s just a reason (for shoppers) to get out and shop local.”
