Although Halloween 2020 means changes for area families with young ghosts, princesses or monsters, the Rugby Jaycees will host a socially-distanced Rugby Business Trunk or Treat on Main Avenue on Friday, Oct. 30, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Trunk or Treat has been a Rugby tradition for “several years,” according to Ashley Wangler of the Jaycees. “We love hosting this event,” she said electronic message recently.

“This year, we are asking businesses to sign up in advance, so we can be sure to reserve enough space and practice social distancing,” Wangler noted.

A flyer posted by the Jaycees outlined measures they’ll take this year to follow Health Department guidelines.

“This year, Trunk or Treat will be held on Main (Avenue), beginning at Third Street and ending at the railroad tracks,” the flyer explained.

Other ways to maintain social distancing described on the flyer include keeping “at least one parking space between vehicles,” keeping the flow of foot traffic in one direction with paths marked on streets and sidewalks, ensuring only adults stationed at vehicle trunks hand out treats, limiting visitors at trunks to one family at a time and waiting in designated areas until groups move to other vehicles.

“In these changing and sometimes scary times, the Rugby Jaycees strive to provide our traditional community events with an emphasis on public safety,” the flyer added. “We encourage every Rugby business to decorate those trunks and come out and enjoy a fantastic and safe Trunk or Treat 2020.”

Wangler said the Jaycees “love hosting this family event and having a safe place for all children to go.”

The event is free for trunk-or-treaters, however, Wangler wrote, “We ask that all families bring an item for the Pierce County Food Pantry.”

Wangler said businesses wishing to participate should call (719) 494-4515 or (701) 776-7236 in advance “to make sure we have enough space for everyone.”
