American Legion contest offers scholarship opportunity for local students

By Sue Sitter - | Oct 17, 2020

The search is on for area high school students interested in using their speaking skills to earn money for college.

Clarence Larson American Legion Post 23 and the North Dakota American Legion will sponsor an oratorical contest in Rugby Saturday, Nov. 21. A practice session for the contest will be held Nov. 14.

Post Commander John Gustafson said the location of the contest has not yet been decided.

“It depends on how many students we have,” he said.

Any area students in grades 9-12 attending high school or home school may enter.

Contestants must speak on a topic relating to the United States Constitution.

The contest is part of the American Legion’s national High School Oratorical Scholarship program.

Gustafson said students winning competitions at division and state levels will receive cash prizes. Finalists from the Rugby district and state division will compete in the state contest at Dickinson January 30, 2021. Top prize at the national contest, to be held April 9-11, 2021 in Indianapolis, will be $25,000.

Interested students or parents may contact Rugby High School counselor Julie Sjol at 776-5201 or Gustafson at 681-9329 for more information.
