Cars and motorcycles of all types are welcome to participate in the third annual Dave Wurgler Memorial Run Sunday, Sept. 26 in Rugby.

The run will begin at Rugby’s Northside Lounge at 11 a.m., according to Stacey Schmaltz, who serves as the car club’s secretary.

“We register there, and they serve a little morning snack or brunch for us, and then, we take off,” Schmaltz said.

Registration for the event is $20.

“The money raised goes back to charities here in Rugby, 100 percent of it,” Schmaltz noted.

Schmaltz said participants will make stops at the Corregidor Bar in Wolford, the Wagon Wheel in Rolette and the Rafter in Towner before meeting up for supper and door prizes at Rugby’s Coffee Cottage.

“We actually have quite a bit of good door prizes,” Schmaltz added. “Last year, we had some really good ones. It’s been getting a little bigger for us each year.”

Schmaltz described the door prizes: “Banks give out gas cards; Main Street Boutique gives out bottles of wine; there are coffee mugs. Everyone almost got two door prizes last year, we had so many donated.”

The run was named for Dave Wurgler, a local car enthusiast who died three years ago, according to Schmaltz. “He used to own Dave’s Standard Oil, where the 3rd Street Station is now,” Schmaltz said. “He had been a lifelong Corvette lover, so after he passed, we decided to do the annual Dave Wurgler Memorial Run. Just like when Dwight Jelsing passed, we decided to do an annual Music in the Park and Car show. That’ll be Dwight’s annual memorial. We’re honoring good members of our car club.”

Schmaltz said the club’s cruise season would wind down in the next two months as the weather grows colder and icier.

“With the COVID going on, with our memorial at the park and the pop-up drive in, our car club has done some good things this year, so we’re excited for next year,” Schmaltz noted.

Schmaltz said the club would still welcome sponsors for the car run.

“We’re open for anything, sponsors, questions, call us,” Schmaltz said.

Rugby Car Club President Mike Black is available at 208-0118 for questions or sponsorship information. Those who have questions or wish to sponsor the event may also call 720-1160.
