The Rugby Police Department has added a new officer to its ranks.

David Wermerskirchen, who moved to Rugby from Minnesota, completed his North Dakota POST training in Bismarck last week after joining the force at the end of June.

“I went to high school in a town south of (Minneapolis and St. Paul),” Wermerskirchen said. After that, I went to law enforcement school for two years in Alexandria (Minn.). I got my degree there.”

Wermerskirchen worked in security at Canterbury Park, a race track in Shakopee, Minn., before moving to Rugby.

“I applied here and got a job in Rugby,” Wermerskirchen added. “I went to a two-week academy to get my POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) test in Bismarck last week. I’m good to go now.”

“I like it in Rugby,” Wermerskirchen added with a smile. “It’s a really tight-knit community. Everyone knows each other and it’s a really friendly community. It’s nice and small. That’s the way I like it. I don’t like anything bigger. I like the atmosphere.”
