A familiar face in local law enforcement has joined the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Duane Gunville Jr., a former officer with the Rugby Police Department, began his first day as a Pierce County deputy on Monday.

A graduate of Dunseith High School and the Peace Officer Training Program at Lake Region State College, Gunville comes from a family with a tradition of service in law enforcement.

When Gunville began his career with the Rugby Police Department last year, he told the Tribune, “My grandfather was a customs officer right out of the military for 28 years. My dad was a police officer at Fort Totten for about six to eight years, I believe.”

Gunville said he also has a relative working as a customs officer and another working as a corrections officer at the Cass County Jail.

Gunville said his new job will cover more territory and include more duties than his former position.

“I do more of the county patrolling instead of just in town,” he said. “I do some of the civil work. You don’t do civil work for the city, just the county.” Gunville said his civil duties include serving subpoenas.

Gunville’s new job entails working in a “much bigger territory,” he said. “I go from pretty much up by the wind farm down to just a couple of miles north of Harvey, from Berwick all the way east past Wolford on the north end, just a few miles from Knox.”

Gunville lives in Rugby with his wife, Shantell, who works as a certified nursing assistant. The couple’s children attend school and daycare in Rugby.

“I like the community I deal with,” Gunville said of Rugby and Pierce County. “They’re easy to get along with. I enjoy the community and meeting new people all the time.”

Pierce County Sheriff Josh Siegler said of the new deputy, “I’m happy to have him aboard. I worked with Duane when he was with the Rugby Police Department. He’s kind, friendly, honest and has good morals. We’re happy to have him.”
