Area residents enjoyed two nights of safe fun last weekend with a cruise on Main Avenue and a drive-in double feature in the future Home of Economy parking lot.
The weekend started with a cruise Friday night down Main Avenue and past Rugby High School, where the lights blazed on over Johnsen Field. Cars new and old, fancy and plain, drove slowly along the route with drivers waving at a few spectators in front yards or on sidewalks. Most participants rode in their vehicles, each separated by one or more car lengths.
Cars played a role in the second night of fun when a drive-in theater popped up in the future Home of Economy parking lot. Chad Ducshcher and Mike Black of the Rugby Car Club sponsored the event. Donations from local businesses provided nearly $6,000 to hire Fargo company Mobile Pro to organize the showing of Disney’s “Cars” and “Herbie: Fully Loaded” to moviegoers.
Rugby firm Marv’s Construction provided a telehandler to hold the movie screens in front of over 100 cars in the lot.
“There were 141 cars for the first movie and 200 cars for the second movie,” said Stacey Schmaltz of the Rugby Car Club. “It was a great success! I’m proud of us!”
