The parking lot in front of the new Home of Economy store, formerly Shopko, will transform into a drive-in theater this evening, courtesy of the Rugby Car Club.

The double feature will begin with a showing of Disney’s “Cars” at 5 p.m., followed by “Herbie: Fully Loaded” at 8 p.m.

Stacey Schmaltz of the Rugby Car Club told the Tribune the night of socially distanced fun was the idea of Chad Duchscher, who contacted event company Mobile Pro in Fargo to set up the pop-up drive-in.

“Marcus Construction is donating the use of their telehandler (to hold the screen). The Lyric Theater will be doing concessions,” Schmaltz said in a social media message to the Tribune.

A post on the car club’s Facebook page explained the Lyric will offer popcorn for curbside pickup at the theater on Main Avenue. No snacks will be sold at the parking lot. Concession sales open at 4 p.m.

No restrooms will be available at the movie site. The car club asks that moviegoers remain in their vehicles during the entire event. Audio for the movies will be streamed via FM radio.

“Mike Black was a huge, huge part in getting donations to raise the $5,000 the car club needed to make this happen,” Schmaltz said of the production.

“If you see Chad Duchscher or Mike Black around please be sure to give them an extra extra special thanks!” the club said via Facebook. “Mike got most of the funds donated. Special thanks to all the businesses and banks that donated to help us make this happen for our community. Super excited to see how this turns out for Rugby!!!”
