The lights in Rugby High School’s Johnsen Field have been shining every Friday night in recent weeks.

Rugby High School Athletic Director Scott Grochow told the Tribune the school staff decided to turn on the lights to send a message to students and athletes missing out on their spring sports season.

“I guess the point I want to make is that we all need to stick together just like good football needs to work together to be successful,” Grochow said via email to the Tribune. “I also want all of us to still have hope and never lose it.”

Grochow said he didn’t come up with the idea and believes it started in Minnesota.

“The lights being on at the football field is to show support for everyone involved in the school – staff, students but, especially the seniors,” he noted.
