Who are the Rugby Lions?
The Rugby Lions Club has been serving the community since 1928 and continues to provide many services to this day. “WE SERVE” is the motto of the organization which Rugby has been doing for 91 years. The Lions Club is the largest service organization in the world.
The Club was founded by a Chicago insurance man named Melvin Jones in 1917 as a men’s service organization. In 1928 the Minot Lions saw a need for a club in Rugby and started the club here in this community. In 1987, the International Lions Club began admitting females to regular membership. At this time the Club meets weekly with a meal and an informative program on a variety of subjects.
Through the years the Rugby Lions have provided many benefits to our community of Rugby. Local members have served in many ways and some have gained state-wide offices. In the recent past over a dozen members have been honored with a Melvin Jones Fellowship for their extra dedication to the local club.
Community residents have supported the projects of the Club for years. One of the proudest projects launched over 20 years ago was Music in the Park. During the summer, on Wednesday evenings, the club, together with the Rugby Park Board, sponsors a musical concert at Ellery Park. This project is supported by the entire community and far beyond and is the envy of many other communities. In turn the community supports the Club by supporting at the annual fund raiser and the hamburger picnics held in the park.
The Club also sponsors Project Joy. During the Christmas season people of the community purchase gifts at various stores around town which in turn are given to needy people among us right here at home. During the season, the Club sings carols at the Heart of America Medical Center. The Club has learned that sometimes this is the last carols heard by some in the institution.
Historically, the Lions Club has focused on eyesight. The Club has purchased eyeglasses for many over the years. A continuing project is the collection of used glasses. These glasses are ultimately distributed to the needy in foreign lands.
Other projects the Club is supporting is the monthly duty at the Lyric Theater by staffing the box office during the evening. Twice a year, the Lions Club picks up litter along Highway 3 north of Rugby. The Club also supports the community many other various ways including blood drives and donations to various organizations.
The membership is open to anyone who has a dedicated voluntary spirit to help carry out the motto: WE SERVE. The Club welcomes anyone who would like to serve and give back to the community.
