Haaland Estates residents welcomed area children and their dogs, cats, rabbits, ponies and donkeys to a special pet show and parade held at the home Monday evening.

Haaland Estates Activities Director Tammy Tufte said bringing the children and their animals to the Haaland community was a perfect way for all to have fun.

“This was our first pet show (in years). They had another one about 30-some years ago, so I got the idea, ‘Why not?'” Tufte said.

“We ended up with 24 contestants, I believe. And we had animals from a couple of miniature horses, to a donkey, rabbits, lots of dogs; some had little tutus on them. They were cute. (The children) paraded them around.”

“I had four residents serve as judges,” Tufte noted. “They had a blast at that. I let them choose who they thought would be (the best in the show). They had first, second and third place, and (the contestants) won a medal.”

The human participants also received suckers and cookies in the shapes of dog bones and pets, courtesy of Haaland’s dietary department. Residents and participants also enjoyed a snack and ice cream.

First place winner was a golden retriever, Nova, and his owner, Allie Monroe, daughter of Haaland’s receptionist Chelsea Monroe.

Second place went to a donkey named June. June was one of a mother-baby pair in the parade, shown by her owner, Kyle Schell.

Third place went to Winnie, a miniature mixed-breed dog shown by owner Sophia Williams.

“It turned out really well, so we’re hoping to have it next year,” Tufte said of the pet show.

Tufte said she hoped for more costumes and a few dog tricks next year, too.

“The dog that got first place did tricks,” Tufte said. “The people laughed and they just had a blast. It was hard (to select a winner), because there were so many cute ones. It was fun,” Tufte added.
