Jazlyn Brossart, Willow City, N.D., is the 2019 recipient of the Carol Shively Memorial Scholarship. The $500 scholarship is administered by the Good Samaritan Health Services Foundation. The winner is selected by the Foundation board.

A 2017 graduate of Rugby High School, Brossart is enrolled in the licensed practical nursing program at Lake Region State College, where she’s scheduled to graduate in July. She’s accepted a position with Sanford Urgent Care, Fargo, and in the fall will begin training as a registered nurse at North Dakota State University.

Brossart got her start as a certified nursing assistant while a high school student, working at Haaland Estates in Rugby. She continues to work part time at Haaland Estates. In her scholarship application, she wrote: “I cannot help but feel joy in heart and fire in my soul when a resident tells me, ‘You will make a great nurse.'”

The scholarship is named for Carol Shively, a former Heart of America Medical Center nursing assistant, who was studying to becoming a nurse when her life was tragically cut short. Endowed through contributions from family and friends, the Carol Shively Memorial Scholarship was established to assist individuals pursuing nursing degrees.

Preference is given to applicants who have been accepted into a nursing program and who have been employed or plan to be employed by the Good Samaritan Hospital Association.
