Fishers brave cold during fishing derby
An estimated 200 people braved cold temperatures while out on Sand Lake last week as part of the Rugby Eagles’ 24th Almost Annual fishing derby.
Both kids and adults fished for winning northerns and perch earlier in the day, and there were three winners in each category.
Sophia Jacobson won the kids’ northern pike division, catching one that weighed 4 pounds, 10 ounces. Haley Demers was close behind, catching a 4-pound 1-ounce northern. Xavier Fritel took third with a 2-pound, 5.8-ounce northern.
In the kids’ perch division, Jaslyn Mitzel took first place with a 5.3-ounce catch. Collin Kraft took second with a 5.2-ounce perch, and Collin Adams third with a 4.4-ounce catch.
A quarter of a pound was all that separated first place from second in the adult northern division. Matthew Oksendahl took first place in the category with a 3-pound, 6-ounce catch. Brandon Oksendahl took second with a 2-pound, 10-ounce catch.
And 0.4 ounces was all that separated second place from third in the same category, as Austin Harmel took third place with a 2-pound, 9.6-ounce catch.
Kevin Vetch took first in the adult perch division with an 8.9-ounce catch. Ben Laber took second with a 6.2-ounce catch, and Jaedon Haman third with a 6-ounce catch.
In the raffles, James Brossart won a Marcum underwater camera, Scott Kraft won an Eskimo propane ice auger and Audrey Michalenko won an Eskimo 3i fishing shelter.
An estimated 200 tickets were sold for this year’s event according to Paul Niemi of the Rugby Eagles.
