County board approves 2019 preliminary budget
In a regular meeting Tuesday morning at the Pierce County Courthouse, the Pierce County Board of County Commissioners voted to approve the preliminary budget for 2019.
The county is levying over $1.7 million in taxes for 2019. Of that amount, over $1.2 million would be levied for the county’s general fund and $537,263.04 would be levied for special revenue funds (which include unorganized townships, weed control, the county’s emergency fund, and road & bridge).
In addition to the over $1.7 million levy, the county board also proposed levies of $31,696 for the Garrison Diversion; $27,500 for the Pierce County Historical Society; $93,531 for the city-county library; $134,450.80 for the Lake Region District Health Unit budget; $165,000 for ambulance service; $31,696 apiece for senior citizens programs and for the Soil Conservation District; $60,928 for the Water Resource District; and $3,900 for the Devils Lake Basin Joint Water Resource.
In terms of mills, in 2019 the county is levying 34.2 mills for the general fund (down from 37.74 in 2018); 1.07 for road & bridge (down from 1.21 in 2018), 0.23 for veteran service (unchanged), 3.41 for federal aid roads (down from 4.04 in 2018) 2 for the emergency fund (down slightly from 2.01 in 2018), 1.48 for the county agent (down from 1.66 in 2018), 2.87 for weed control (down from 3 in 2018), 4.24 for the district health unit (up from 3.97 in 2018), 1.92 for the water resource board (down from 1.99 in 2018), 1 for senior citizens (unchanged), 3.9 for the county-city library (down from 4 in 2018), 0.75 for the Historical Society (unchanged), 1 for Garrison Diversion (unchanged), 6 for ambulance service (up from 1.93 in 2018) 1 for soil conservation (down from 1.17) and 1 for the state medical center (unchanged) for a total of 66.07 mills (down from 66.7 in 2018).
The county will hold a hearing on the budget on Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. at the courthouse.
