Locally grown, locally made

By Staff | Jul 27, 2018

Slavic Heritage Farm is a 12-acre farm situated 25 miles South of Rugby and a little over 15 miles North of Anamoose. Family run by Mirek and Julia Petrovic, they state on their website that they say yes to honest organic gardening practicies, self-sustainability, biodynamics, passionate animal husbandry, community outreach, and living each day to the fullest.

In the last few years they have put a larger focus on community outreach through aggregation of local products and the distribution of it through a hub. Now in just 2018, they took a new step through the opening of their restaurant and bakery: FARMtastic Heritage Foods.

“It is a multifaceted business,” explained Mirek Petrovic. The main purpose is aggregation of locally grown produce and berries. We have very good access to good local growers and all meals have local produce in the dishes.

After opening in March, FARMtastic offers those around a place to not only go and purchase local produce and berries at their country store, but to also eat meals or treats made from the same produce.

Placed in an old historical building at 707 Main Street, Petrovic said the community was very helpful in accepting the new business and in helping with the remodeling.

“We chose Anamoose because it is closest to our farm and we know the community well,” said Petrovic. “We had been working on the idea of the place for awhile, so when the building was put up for sale, we decided to take it.”

When it comes to the food they offer, there is no shortage of variety. They offer soups, vegetable dishes, paninis, breads and pastries, specialty deserts, and more for lunches and dinners. They work to offer different foods reflecting their heritage with some of their recent treats including Russian Blyny and Pirozhki.

Each week the menu changes as different products come in and new ideas are formed.

Open Tuesday through Friday, they run from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Occasionally they will open on Saturdays, but not always, so they post any possible openings on to their Facebook page.
