NDNA hosts debate just as Senate election nears
Just as the election campaign enters its final stages, the North Dakota Newspaper Association will host a debate between U.S. Senate candidates Heidi Heitkamp and Kevin Cramer.
The debate is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Bismarck Public School’s Career Academy at Bismarck State College.
That’s less than three weeks ahead of the Nov. 6 election, which many believe will be the most expensive campaign in North Dakota history.
Democrat Heitkamp is the incumbent, having served one term. Cramer, her Republican opponent, is giving up his seat in the U.S. House in order to challenge her.
North Dakota’s race could help determine which party controls the Senate, where Republicans currently hold a slim majority. Cramer initially opted to seek re-election in the House but jumped to the Senate contest in February.
In the debate, the candidates will be questioned by a three-member panel of newspaper journalists, two of them NDNA members and one a student journalist. WDAY TV will provide the moderator.
The debate will be broadcast live on Forum Communication’s ABC network: WDAY in Fargo, WDAZ in Grand Forks, KBMY in Bismarck and KMCY in Minot. It also will be livestreamed on all Forum Communications web sites.
