What the approved EMS levy will do
Pierce County voters approved the additional mills for emergency medical services Rugby EMS provides.
Chase Wangler, EMS Manager at Heart of America Medical Center says “We are thankful this vote passed and the voters understand the importance of the future of EMS in rural areas. With the additional funds received from the mill levy we can continue to keep two Advances Life Support (ALS) crews available 24/7. What these additional mills allows us to do, is care for patients in emergency situations without delaying care for those needing transport to another facility.”
Funds received from the mill levy will be used to help offset expenses associated with a 24/7 crew, replace old and outdated EMS equipment as needed, continual state required training and provide ambulance coverage for community services and events.
In addition to providing emergency medical care, Rugby EMS will continue to support the Rural Responder program. This is a state, grant funded program that places AED’s in the homes of families who live in rural areas. Having rural responders is important in the chain of survival for the critically ill and injured. Depending on the location it can take up to 20 minutes or longer for an ambulance to reach the outer limits of the response area. At this time there are 12 rural responder families participating in the program.
Rugby EMS is also recognized as one of five Cardiac Ready Communities in the State of ND. Rugby EMS has achieved this designation by continual public education on cardiac arrest. There are approximately 50 AED’s placed in local organizations, businesses and churches throughout the community. There are also over 750 residents in Rugby currently trained in CPR and AED use. These efforts have boosted Rugby’s cardiac arrest survival rate to 45%; the national average is 10%.
The additional mills received will help fund this community service and ensure patients will be taken care of 24/7, 365 days a year.
