A 51-year-old Towner man is accused of having a sexual relationship with a female inmate at the Heart of America Correctional Center in Rugby when he was working there as a cook.

Marcelo Revelero Lara is charged with sexual abuse of a ward, a Class C felony, in district court in Pierce County.

Lara made an initial appearance on the charge in court on March 29 and has been released on bond. A criminal hearing is scheduled for April 23 in court.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court, administrators at the jail were informed on March 19 that Lara had had sex with the 33-year-old female inmate in the walk-in cooler in the kitchen jail. The woman had been allowed to assist in preparation of the jail meals while she was incarcerated and Lara was her supervisor. Another female inmate who worked in the kitchen told authorities about the relationship.

The female inmate who had the relationship with Lara told authorities it was consensual. Lara also reportedly acknowledged the relationship, which he also said was consensual. Lara allegedly admitted to authorities that he knew the relationship was wrong.

The woman was being held at the jail in Rugby on federal charges, including an immigration hold, according to the affidavit. She and Lara communicated mainly in Spanish. An agent from the U.S. Border Patrol who is fluent in Spanish assisted with translating interviews during the investigation.
