Jump Rope for Heart surpasses fundraising goal
On March 8th, Ely Elementary celebrated their Jump Rope for the Heart fundraising effort with a total amount of $15,122 raised this year. The original goal set was $11,000.
“We promised the kids to let them have a celebration at the end, where we would let the top three fund raisers put a crme pie in the face of Mr. Risovi, our school counselor,” Jason Gullickson, Ely’s principal, commented. “We are really proud of the kids and the work they did.”
The pie in the face privilege went to 1st place Addie Boppre, a fourth grader, who raised $444 from Mrs. Grochow’s class. Arianna Gayle-Powell, a fifth grader raised $338 for 2nd place in Mrs. Risovi’s class. Sawyer Brossart, a second grader in Mrs. Williams’ class was in 3rd place with $325. Each one of the children got their own crme pie to put in Mr. Risovi’s face. “We had instructed them to gently put the pie in his face,” Heidi Backstrom said, “and they were all very safe and gentle.”
The top classes in the Jump for the Heart fundraising went to Mr. Johnston’s class for $1655.00.
Second place was Mrs. Wurgler for $1,333.00 and third place went to Mrs. Foster with $1,331.50 which was a close competition.
“In the last three years these wonderful kids have raised $46,580.00 jumping rope. We are teaching them about heart health and how to care for their heart,” Gullickson said. “Heidi Backstrom is our physical education instructor and she coordinated this event very well.”
During the presentation in the gymnasium, the children were asked specific questions about heart health, and they happily shouted the answers. All the kids participated in supporting the winners and pie in the face fun. The money was donated to the American Heart Association.
