Here comes Influenza B
The Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby has reported that they have removed the ban on visitors in the hospital, long term care facility and Haaland Estates. Although the flu is reducing, new strains of the flu are showing up in surrounding counties.
Total influenza cases reported for the week declined for the third week since the season picked up. Activity is still widespread. It is likely that the influenza season peaked the week ending January 27, 2018, but influenza B activity is increasing. An increase in influenza B is typical for this part of the season. Although activity is declining, it is likely widespread influenza activity will continue for some time, so it is not too late to get vaccinated.
North Dakota flu deaths stand at 20 for the season, for the week ending January 17. Flu season confirmed cases is at 609 for the week. Cumulative cases for this season is 6,266.
Handwashing and staying home when you are sick are also important for reducing the spread of influenza. It is recommended children with influenza be kept out of school or child care until they have been fever free.
