Cattle auction breaks local sales record
The Rugby Auctions sold a record 5,250 head of cattle Monday, November 13. This sale was the largest ever held in Rugby.
Drought conditions in the western part of North Dakota attributed to the increased sales of young cattle which might normally have been kept over the winter.
Staff was busy until 5 a.m. the next morning finishing paperwork and delivery. The sale brought people from far away, which contributed to a busy day at town restaurants, gas stations and shops.
Auctioneer Mike Ostrem said “It was a smooth transition even with that large number. The calves moved quickly through the pens, and staff was very well organized but it was a record number.”
Ostrem was in Devils Lake for another auction the following day where they auctioned an additional 2500 calves.
The next auction at Rugby Auction will be Monday, November 20 and will feature bred cows and heifers. Auctions are held each Monday throughout the year.
