Children’s Theater to perform ‘Space Pirates!’
Village Arts’ Children’s Theater has been busy preparing “Space Pirates!”, a musical.
The show centers around four children on a school field trip who get abducted by aliens. While on the ship, pirates obsessed with all things Earth take over.
“There are a lot of songs and a lot of dances. I have never seen a show that was so heavy on the music,” Jill Roberts, director, said.
Roberts chose this musical after doing a lot of research, she said. While Children’s Theater has done Disney musicals in the past, the royalties are very high. Roberts found “Space Pirates!” through a fairly new company, which was offering great shows for one-third of the price to produce better-known musicals.
“In a show, there are always characters who carry the plot, but in this show, they have all got big roles. It isn’t just a select few who have all the lines, singing and dancing. It’s really spread out. It’s a good show,” Roberts said.
Auditions for “Space Pirates!” were held after the wrap up of Village Arts production of “My Fair Lady.” Rehearsals began on July 5 and are held Monday through Friday evenings and Saturdays for some roles.
“The kids seem to be enjoying it. They’re giving up a lot of their time and a lot of their summer to do this. We have had to work around a lot of schedules because there’s just so much available for kids in Rugby, so it’s hard. The kids we do have are very talented, and they work hard,” Roberts said about the cast of 20, who have been learning comedic timing, characterization, and how to sing in different parts.
According to Roberts, “Space Pirates!” teaches the lesson of learning to be comfortable in your own skin and that it is okay to be different.
“There are some really cute moments, and the music is really jazzy and catchy, which is great for children. With children’s theater, it’s about them having fun,” Roberts said.
Assistant director for the show is Darby Deckert. Brian Linstrom is stage manager. Dave Schnakenburg is on piano, Anya Selland is the choreographer, Keeya Hager is the costume director, and Tanner Lind is building and painting sets.
Show times for “Space Pirates!” are July 31 and August 1 at 7 p.m. The show runs 50 minutes to an hour, and there will be an intermission with cake.
Village Arts’ Children’s Theater is sponsored in part by a grant from the N.D. Council on the Arts.
